It’s ‘Put on Purple Day’ for lupus today

A local woman is raising awareness about lupus during Lupus Awareness Month. Approximately 1.5 million Americans and at least 5 million people worldwide are affected by this unpredictable and sometimes fatal disease.
Pat McKinnon, a lupus survivor, is asking that the local community join the Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) by wearing purple today in support of “Put on Purple Day,” a national campaign for lupus awareness.
On Thursday night at Brodie Field, supporters gathered wearing their purple shirts: “Tift County was painted purple by lupus survivors and their family and friend supporters,” McKinnon said.

Local churches Ty Ty Baptist, Victory Baptist and Oak Grove Baptist are combining their choirs this weekend for a patriotic musical in recognition of Memorial Day.

Armed Forces to be honored Saturday

In observance of Armed Forces Day, local veterans have organized a patriotic ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday at Veterans Memorial Park in downtown Tifton.
The ceremony is dedicated to those who have served the nation. The American Legion organizations and the VFW are sponsoring it.

Summer Reading Center cancelled

After 15 consecutive years, Tifton’s Accelerated Reader (AR) Summer Reading Center program has been cancelled for this summer.
The AR Center, part of the Reading Capital of the World initiative, is an annual program of the Tift County Foundation for Educational Excellence. Each summer, students and adults take AR tests on books they have read, amassing points for themselves and for local schools.

Disco Queen Donna Summer dies at 63, TMZ reports

TMZ reports that the Queen of Disco, Donna Summer, died this morning in Florida at age 63 following a battle with cancer.

Summer was a five-time Grammy winner who shot to superstardom in the '70s with iconic hits including Last Dance, Hot Stuff and Bad Girls.

Flint RiverQuarium seeks Albany city funding

City commissioners in Albany are asking the city manager to consider a budget measure that would give the Flint RiverQuarium in $150,000 to help it operate.

City Manager James Taylor's proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year beginning July 1 didn't include funding for the downtown educational and tourist attraction.
