TIFTON — Tift County Farm Bureau recently joined Georgia Farm Bureau in donating $16,000 to the Peanut Butter for Haiti project. Peanut butter and other peanut products are being delivered to the citizens of Haiti who were affected by the January earthquake.
The total donation will purchase 17,777 pounds of peanut butter — equaling 248,888 servings.
As of Feb. 8, the project had shipped six truckloads or about 204,000 pounds of peanut butter to the Caribbean nation. Relief organizations including Operation Blessing, Food for the Poor, Feed the Children and Catholic Relief Services are distributing the peanut butter in Haiti.
“As farmers, our job is to feed and clothe the world, so we welcomed the opportunity to support this effort by donating $100, which will help feed the people of Haiti devastated by the earthquake,” said Gary Walker, Tift County Farm Bureau president.
Georgia Farm Bureau contributed $5,090 of the donation and asked its 158 county offices to join it in supporting the cause. The organization’s county offices responded by donating a total of $10,910.
“We’re really excited to be part of this effort to help the people of Haiti recover,” said Georgia Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall.
Early County 2055, a non-profit organization based in Blakely, initiated Peanut Butter for Haiti. The project expanded as numerous peanut organizations including the Georgia Peanut Commission, the National Peanut Buying Points Association, Birdsong Peanuts and Golden Peanut Company offered their support. Cash donations are being used to buy peanut butter at cost from Tara Foods and ConAgra.
Donations will be accepted through the end of March, which is National Peanut Month. Tax-deductible contributions may be sent to Early County 2055, Peanut Butter for Haiti, P.O. Box 725, Blakely, GA 39823. Checks should be made payable to Early County 2055 and designated Peanut Butter for Haiti.
