Deidre Mercer Martin honored for fundraising work

The Greater Augusta Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals recently named Deidre Mercer Martin, vice chancellor for university advancement at the University of South Carolina Aiken, as the “Outstanding Fundraising Professional” for 2009.

Martin is a 1985 graduate of Berry College (bachelor’s degree), a 1987 graduate of Georgia State University (master’s degree), and a 1994 graduate of the University of South Carolina (doctoral degree). She is the daughter of Milton and Sandra Mercer of Omega and a 1981 graduate of Colquitt County High School. She has worked at the University of South Carolina since 1988 and also serves as an adjunct faculty member at USC Aiken in the Department of Communications.

Martin, along with six other individuals and organizations, will be recognized at the 2009 National Philanthropy Day Luncheon, which will be held Wednesday at the Augusta Country Club.

The AFP's Outstanding Fundraising Professional award recognizes those whose work exemplifies leadership, competence, achievement, ethical standards, and commitment to philanthropy. Chancellor Tom Hallman said he was very proud to hear that Martin had been recognized for her hard work in the fundraising profession.

“For those of us who work with Deidre every day, it is easy to take her abilities, dedication, and professionalism for granted,” said Hallman. “This award is very well-deserved, in light of her successes and her enthusiasm for a job that was brand new to her only a few years ago.”

Each year individuals and organizations are nominated by members of the Greater Augusta Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals in a number of award categories.
