ATLANTA — A Democratic gubernatorial candidate is urging former Gov. Roy Barnes to reconsider his run for office.
Former Georgia National Commander David Poythress is urging Barnes, a fellow Democrat, to “rethink” his decision to run. He says he’s worried about a replay of the 2002 contest, when Barnes was defeated by Republican Sonny Perdue.
Barnes has said he has the vision and experience to lead Georgia better than the other contenders.
Poythress and Barnes are in a crowded Democratic field to replace Perdue, who cannot run again. Other Democratic candidates include House Minority Leader DuBose Porter and Attorney General Thurbert Baker. Six Republicans are also running.
