Local republican candidate Suzanne Carter Johnson (incumbent) was elected to her third term as Tift County Probate Court Judge over Democratic candidate Tyrone “Ty” Taylor. The unofficial and incomplete election summary report, which was provided to The Gazette sometime after 10 p.m. Tuesday, shows that Johnson garnered 9,291 votes (70.83 percent) while Taylor had 3,823 votes (29.15 percent); 12 out of 12 precincts reporting.
Out of 2,0195 registered voters in Tift County, 1,3949 citizens (69.07 percent) made it to the polls for this 2012 election.
A spokeswoman at the old gym on Fourth Street and Chesnutt Avenue (Election Central) noted Wednesday that absentee ballots (492) were included in the results. Also, she stated that UOCAVA ballots (military and overseas civilians) are still being counted, as well as provisional ballots, which will all be counted by Friday.
Also, according to the unofficial summary report, Tift County voted no for the charter school amendment with a total of 7,606 votes (58.60 percent) over 5,373 yes votes (41.40 percent). However, according to the Georgia Secretary of State website, the majority of Georgians voted in favor of the amendment with 2,162,283 yes votes (58.54 percent) over 1,531,451 no votes (41.46 percent).
In addition, Republican candidate Tyler Harper took the victory for Georgia State Senate District 7 over Democratic candidate Donald Mitchell. Harper garnered 40,016 votes (71.53 percent) while Mitchell had 15,926 votes (28.47 percent), according to the Georgia Secretary of State website.
The statewide results show that Georgia had a 71.67 percent voter turnout — 3,890,949 out of 5,428,980 registered voters went to the polls.

UGA Tifton Campus funding approved
When Gov. Nathan Deal signed the budget recently passed by the Georgia state legislature, a long-awaited renovation project for the University of Georgia Tifton Campus was finally moved forward.The budget includes $4.7 million for the renovation of the Tift building on the UGA Tifton Campus.
