Talent at the Tift: 'America's Got Talent' to perform here

TIFTON — America’s Got Talent 2009 winner Kevin Skinner will perform at 8 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Tift Theatre and Tifton singer and songwriter Kirsten Underwood and her band will open the night.

The Tifton Theatre is preparing to introduce a variety of fundraisers to the community over the next several months.

General admission to the Oct. 9 event is $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Tickets are now available and can be picked up at the Main Street Office, Western Auto, or by contacting Tifton Theatre Director Dottie Freeman at 382-5150 or by e-mail at dfreeman@tifton.net. This event is expected to pack the theater with country-music-loving fans from all around.

Freeman said that if the show sells out, Skinner has agreed to do a second show later that night at 10 p.m. Therefore, it would be beneficial for people to purchase their tickets in advance, so that Skinner could have a good idea about whether or not to plan for a second show.

Skinner, a southern chicken catcher from Mayfield, Ky., and uprising country singer/songwriter, first appeared on the hit show, America’s Got Talent on NBC in 2009. His impressive voice and smooth guitar playing proved to the judges and America that he deserved a spot on the show. His talent earned a place in the hearts of fans and ultimately, the competition.

Freeman said that she’s absolutely thrilled to have Skinner come to perform at the theater.

“I was racking my brain trying to figure out what I could do for the theater,” Freeman said. “I thought about Kevin Skinner because I was very impressed with him on the show. So, I went on a whim and contacted him. He wanted to help and agreed to come. He’s doing it just because I asked. I have found him to be very down-to-earth and humble.”

Freeman is hoping that with Skinner’s appearance in Tifton, other towns will pick up on it. Skinner is taking a chance to come put on a wonderful show for the people to enjoy, she said.

“He is definitely an upcoming star. He will be big for sure,” Freeman said. “It’s such a great opportunity to have him come to our city and perform at the theater.”

There will be a “Meet and Greet” with Skinner. Available merchandise set up for sale, including his newly released CD.

“This show will be jam-tight with country music,” Freeman said.
