CASA Day at the capitol will take place Tuesday, Feb. 5 at the state capitol in Atlanta. Staff and child advocates from Coastal Plain CASA, Inc. plan to attend.
An annual event hosted by Georgia Court Appointed Special Advocates (Georgia CASA), Inc., the day centers around CASA volunteers, board members and staff from across the state meeting with members of the Georgia legislature and sharing their concerns about the abused and neglected children in foster care that their CASA programs serve.
This year’s event will celebrate the 25th year of the CASA organization in Georgia with House and Senate resolutions that morning. The event will also include a legislative briefing and CASA group photo. CASA constituents will also meet with their legislators, concluding with a luncheon to thank the legislators for their support of the CASA organization and child welfare issues.
Coastal Plain CASA, Inc. is an affiliate of Georgia CASA, a nonprofit organization with 47 community-based affiliate programs. The CASA program is central to fulfilling society’s most fundamental obligation by making sure a qualified, compassionate adult will fight for and protect a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect and to learn and grow in the safe embrace of a loving family.
Last year, over 1,960 CASA volunteers in Georgia served over 8,800 abused and neglected children. Locally, 35 CASA volunteers served 141 children in Tift, Turner, Irwin and Worth counties.

Identity Theft: Do all you can to protect your credit, debit cards
It's summertime and there may be only two words on your mind – road trip. As we hit the roads this summer for vacations we all make stops at the gas station and the ATM.
Unfortunately, so do identity thieves. They set up machines called skimmers on gas pumps and ATMs that are designed to fool you and benefit them. The devices read your debit or credit card and record the number, which the thief can collect by retrieving the skimmer or even remotely using a smartphone and a wireless Internet connection. Gazette asking for your help
The Tifton Gazette is celebrating its 125th year and we would like to celebrate by doing what we do best – reflecting the people, places and events that make Tift County such a great place to live. County millage rate remains same
Tift County Commissioners voted unanimously in a called meeting Tuesday to keep the millage rate set at 12.183 for both incorporated and unincorporated areas of the county.
The rate was set at .312 mills for the Special Services Tax District, which includes Ty Ty and Omega. -
GEMA study reveals increased emergency preparedness across state

A mobile home located at 30 Ira Drive caught on fire Sunday afternoon. A call came in at approximately 4:22 p.m. Sunday to the Tifton-Tift County Fire Department.
