ATLANTA — Georgia Democratic legislators are putting forward their own transportation funding plan.

The Democratic bill would funnel the fourth penny currently collected as part of the tax on motor fuel to road and other infrastructure improvements. It would also allow counties to band together and ask voters to hike the state sales tax by one cent hike to pay for transportation. That sales tax proposal has failed to win approval the last two years.

The proposal is a constitutional amendment so it would require two-thirds approval in the House and the Senate, both controlled by Republicans. It must then receive voter approval.

State Sen. Doug Stoner, of Smyrna, and other Democrats are expected to provide more details at a news conference Thursday.
