ATLANTA — Gov. Sonny Perdue is showing support for legislation making it illegal to help students cheat on tests required by the State Department of Education.

State Rep. Matt Ramsey is introducing the legislation. House Bill 1121 will make it unlawful for anyone to knowingly tamper with or facilitate cheating on tests required by the State Department of Education. Violators will be guilty of a misdemeanor and have their certification suspended or revoked. Under House Bill 1111, violators will also be subject to the loss of their pensions.

Perdue says the bill is needed to ensure the integrity of state tests.

A state audit released this summer found evidence that standardized test answer sheets had been tampered with at four elementary schools across the state in 2008.
