Woman shot at Peterson Apartments Thursday

TIFTON — A 21-year-old woman was airlifted to a Macon hospital after being shot in the side Thursday morning at Peterson Apartments off Timmons Drive.

Police officers responding to the shooting arrived at the apartment complex and found the injured woman on the ground and 27-year-old Thomas Howard Jr. still holding a 45-caliber handgun nearby. Tifton Police Dept. detective Terry Allen said that the arrest was without incident and that Howard is charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Allen didn’t speculate on the relationship between Howard and the victim, but said that “it appears that it is a family-violence related case.” He said that Howard was living at the apartments as of Thursday.

Allen said he was withholding releasing the woman’s name until her relatives were notified. He said that the last he heard Thursday, she was in stable condition and expected to live.
