TIFTON —
Local attorney Patrick Kunes has helped organize several different local concerts at the Tift Theatre. This year, he’s planning to organize a local festival for the community.
He recently met with the Tifton City Council at a November workshop to discuss having a “turfgrass festival” Saturday, May 4 in place of the Love Affair Fine Arts Festival, since it will not be returning.
Kunes said he’s teaming up with Greg Millette, director of the United Way of South Central Georgia, who will be heading up getting donations.
He stated that the festival will be similar to the Southeast Lawn and Garden Expo, which was started by the Literacy Volunteers of Tifton-Tift County. Now that United Way is taking it over, the organization is looking at rebranding the event as the “Turfgrass Festival.”
Kunes said art vendors will still be welcomed. He stated that they’re planning on keeping the festival for children and performance arts such as clogging, local dance troops, etc.
He had proposed to the council in November to offer BYOC (bring your own cooler) after 4 p.m. on the day of the event. He had explained that the festival would then transition from a kid event into an adult event. He said the festival could possibly start at 10 a.m. and end about 7:30 or 8 p.m. The adult entertainment would be offered at the end of the festival with jazz and bluegrass/rock bands. He plans to have local performers throughout the day.
Also, Kunes mentioned that the Dogwood Music Festival in Moultrie will be returning. The lineup will be announced Saturday, Jan. 12. A reveal party will be held at the Colquitt County Arts Center that night, which will be by invitation only. There will be live entertainment from local musicians and Albany Idol winner Caylee Anna, who was featured on the premiere of the ABC’s network’s new show, Duets; she was flown to New York to audition for and sing with Jennifer Nettles, the lead singer of Sugarland. More information will be announced on the Dogwood Music Festival Facebook page. They are also announcing the launch of their new website, dogwoodmusicfestival.com.
The festival will be held Saturday, April 27 at the Sunbelt Agriculture Exposition. It will start at 11 a.m. Kunes says it will be an all day event.
