Teacher Amy McClendon’s fourth grade class at Charles Spencer Elementary recently studied a unit on force and motion. They completed several experiments involving friction, gravity and centripetal force. With background knowledge of the forces that make a roller coaster work, students worked in cooperative groups to design and construct their own roller coasters made from pipe insulation and recyclable items from home.

Noted civic volunteer Donna Tillman dies
Donna Tillman, a local UPS driver and well-respected woman in the Tifton community who continuously volunteered her time to help others, died early Wednesday morning after suffering from a pulmonary embolism, which is a sudden blockage of a major blood vessel (artery) in the lung, usually caused by a blood clot that travels to the lung from a vein in the leg.

Portable planetarium is at Museum of Arts
The Tifton Museum of Arts and Heritage continues its emphasis on astronomy this week with the arrival of a portable planetarium from the Oatland Wildlife Center in Savannah.

Publix expected to open by August
Publix Super Market is expected to open here by late August and initially will employ 120 people, the company’s district manager told the Tifton Rotary Club on Wednesday.
“We’re very excited to come to Tifton,” Keith Gilbert said.
Gilbert, who oversees markets in South Georgia and North Florida, said the local store’s workforce will entail 16 managerial positions and 35 fulltime jobs with the remaining positions being part-time. - Bill would let Ga. distilleries give free samples

Bids for Kids TV auction is Saturday
The Exchange Club of Tifton hosts the 19th annual Bids for Kids Television Auction from 5 until 10 p.m. Saturday to benefit agencies that prevent child abuse in Tifton and Tift County.
“This will be a record,” said Tyron Spearman, club president. “Over $40,000 in cash and auction items have been donated by area merchants and friends of the Exchange Club. We are most appreciative of this tremendous support.” -
Tift County Sheriff’s Office honored
Harris Blackwood, director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, visited Tuesday to honor the Tift County Sheriff’s Office for its work in traffic safety.
The office was cited for placing first in the International Association of Chiefs of Police National Law Enforcement Challenge. The group also took second in the Georgia Governor’s Challenge.
Besides those accolades, Blackwood also brought a surprise as he presented Sgt. James Partain with a resolution from the General Assembly honoring the Tift Sheriff’s Office for the recognition.
“The Tift County Sheriff’s Office is among the best in the nation,” said Blackwood. -

James Gibbs Patrick Sr., a well-known local farmer, businessman and former member of the Tift County Board of Education, died Tuesday at his home here.

Daycare employee faces 7 more charges
Already in custody on one child molestation charge, Shelton Ray Floyd, who was an employee of Upon Eagles Wings Daycare at 334 E. Golden Road, now faces seven additional charges in the matter, authorities say.
Floyd, 60, of Tifton, was arrested last week on a child molestation charge dealing with inappropriate contact with children ranging from ages three to 10. The contact happened while the children were in the facility’s van or at the facility itself, authorities said.
