Trees for Troops on the way

TIFTON — With the help of some ‘real’ soldiers and Pinecrest Baptist Church, Brumby & White Christmas Tree Farm shipped out the first 115 Trees for Troops Friday morning. Somehow Dec. 7 seemed fitting as the 71st anniversary of the “Day of Infamy,” when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, catapulting the USA into World War II.

Trees for Troops is a national effort, whereby Christmas tree farms across America provide trees to military families.

Georgia Christmas tree growers pledged 1200 trees for 2012, with Brumby & White committed to 150. Lots of local support for the military makes it much easier to get the job done.

Pinecrest Baptist Church of Cordele sees to both the transportation and distribution of the trees. Five trailers picked up the baled trees at 10 a.m. with the assurance that each tree will get to the designated families in need (rank E4 and below) on Saturday. The trees will be delivered to the Army National Guard Armories in Tifton, Forsyth, Macon, Cordele and Americus.

Co-owner JH White commented how great it was working shoulder to shoulder with guys in camouflage fatigues, who joined farm staff, American Legion Post 21 volunteers and Pinecrest Baptist Church members to load the trailers.

Among those participating were Tommy Treadway, Wayne and Ann Duffell (Post 21); Bill Brookerd, Ronnie Gay, Johnny Jackson and Lowell Smith (Pinecrest); JH White, Doug Barnes, Hermilo Montes, Beth Thacker, Josh Slocumb and Moppy and Mike Brumby (Brumby & White).

A special salute to the men in uniform who did much of the work: Sgt. Ryan Holley, Sgt. Mike Class, Major Thomas Bennett, SFC Frederick Johnson and SFC Charlie Barner.
