Flatlanders' Frolic planned Sept. 5 in Lakeland

LAKELAND — The 39th annual Flatlanders Fall Frolic will kick off Saturday with the Miss Fall Frolic Beauty Pageant and continue with a full day of activities Sept. 5.

The Miss Fall Frolic Beauty Pageant will be held at the Mary Threatte Arts & Civic Center. Contestants will vie for the Miss Fall Frolic crown and top honors in six other age divisions. Admission to the pageant is $5 with children 5 and under admitted free.

Area runners will compete Sept. 5 in the annual Dawg-Gone Race that includes the 5K Road Race and the One-Mile Fun Run. Registration on race day will begin at 7 a.m. at the First Baptist Church parking lot adjacent to the Church Street site where the race will begin at 8 a.m.

All runners that complete the race events will receive T-shirts and trophies will be awarded to the top finishers. For pre-registration information, contact the Lakeland-Lanier Chamber of Commerce at (229) 482-9755.

The festival’s centerpiece event, Flatlanders Fall Frolic, will open at 9 a.m. Sept. 5 on the Lanier County Courthouse Square in downtown Lakeland. The huge outdoor show will be filled to capacity with vendors of arts, crafts, antiques, foods and beverages and children’s activities.

Saturday night’s frolic concert will begin at 7 p.m. on the outdoor stage at Threatte Center. The Tim Cochran Band, the concert’s headliner group, will begin performing at 8 p.m.

The Cochran band consists of four young men who will be playing Country, Southern Rock and “cover tunes” from top albums.

Admission to the Saturday night concert is $2 with children 12 and under admitted free. Those attending the concert are encouraged to take folding chairs to the event for seating.

Started in 1971, the Frolic is sponsored by the Lanier County Lions Club, which continues as the overall sponsor of the Frolic along with other groups organizing and producing different segments of the festival.
