CASA playhouses up for grabs

TIFTON — November is National Adoption Month. Coastal Plain CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) employs community volunteers to serve as advocates for foster children, ensuring that their needs are met, especially their need for a safe, permanent home.

If you are now thinking of that perfect Christmas gift, you can check out the 2012 CASA playhouses, now appearing on the courthouse lawn. Five organizations or individuals have contributed playhouses for this annual fundraising event.

Tickets, which are $5 each, are now available at the CASA office by calling 386-9765 and through CASA volunteers, board members and staff. Each ticket gives you five chances to win. All proceeds go directly towards the advocacy work of local foster care children.

Tickets are also available at several area businesses, including Alphabet Soup, Ameris Bank, Western Auto, Lion Chasers Christian Book Store, Plant TiftNet, Tifton Home Center, Wild Chicken Kitchen and Roberts & Co. Near the courthouse, tickets can be purchased at Erika Johnson’s law office.

The names of the playhouse winners will be drawn at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, on the courthouse steps, during Hometown Holidays. You do not have to be present to win, but winners who are present will get first choice of the houses.

Organizations building playhouses are Northside Baptist Church Men’s Ministry, Agrium, Tifton-Tift County Fire Department, Sammy Mason, a CASA volunteer and construction classes at Tift County High School. The TCHS playhouse is underwritten by the Tift County Council on Child Abuse.

CASA provides specially trained community volunteers who act as personal advocates of abused and/or neglected children in the court and foster care systems.

This service is provided until the child is placed in a safe, nurturing, permanent home. Without this kind of help, children may spend longer than necessary in foster care and be moved from home to home more frequently.

Since November 2000, well over 600 children have been served by the volunteers of Coastal Plain CASA.

A new volunteer training class will begin at 6 p.m. Jan. 14, 2013. If interested in becoming a volunteer, call 386-9765 or come by the CASA office at 126 First St.
