TIFTON —
About a week ago, the Omega Police Department received a complaint from a citizen stating that they had noticed some “traffic” around an abandoned house on Watson Circle, says Omega Police Chief Eric Windmoller.
“My officers patrolled the area but didn’t find anything out of the ordinary,” he stated in an e-mail.
He further explained, “On Dec. 6, officer Tim Bruner drove past the residence and noticed what looked like illegal dumping of trash on the side of the house and asked me to meet him there to help him find out who was responsible. We looked through the trash but did not find anything to tie the illegal dumping to anyone. We walked around the house and noticed other code enforcement violations and then walked up onto the front porch. There, hidden off to the side, was a push lawnmower that had been reported stolen a few weeks back.”
Windmoller said he also found a bag of marijuana mixed with tobacco underneath a table. He stated that they continued to look around on the porch, and Bruner opened a drawer of a small desk and discovered 20 large crack rocks drying on a plate.
“When manufacturing crack cocaine, a drying time is needed before the rocks can be smoked,” he said. “Altogether, they have a street value of about $2,500. There was also some gang paraphernalia left on the porch. All items were collected as evidence and logged at the police department.”
Windmoller added, “Since the property is abandoned, and has been for years, we do not see making any drug cases on the owners.”
However, he noted that they may still be charged under the code enforcement violations if they can be found.
“We are continuing to work on this drug case and others. Of course, we have suspects toward this case, but these things take time,” he stated. “Basically, all we did that day was get some drugs off the street before they got sold and made some dealer lose a pile of money. It would be nice to have an arrest to go along with the drugs, but I’m pretty content with just messing up a dealer’s day, also.”
