TIFTON —
Local law enforcement agencies were busy over the three-day Labor Day weekend responding to reports of shootings, burglaries and other crimes around the city and county.
Early Saturday morning, an officer radioed to responding officers that shots had been fired at the corner of Fifth Street and South Central Avenue.
According to the incident report filed at the Tifton Police Department, the officer was in a foot pursuit at 2:05 a.m. with two males who were running towards Commerce Way. Several other officers responded to the location.
The report states that Lt. Terry Kiser, and two other officers arrived on the scene and observed a 34-year-old man with blood streaming from his head sitting on the front steps of the residence in the 300 block of South Central Avenue.
According to the report, an officer notified dispatch to have EMS respond. Two witnesses approached the officers and reported the shooting. One of the witnesses complained of being shot in the right leg.
The report states that another victim, a 19-year-old male, appeared and was complaining of being shot in the buttocks.
The witness who was shot in the leg reported that the shooters were still located inside the residence.
After learning this information officers searched the residence for the shooters. According to the report, there were two males in the first room of the residence inside the door to the right. Their identity was recognized by one of the officers and they both were secured. The search continued.
An officer then reported that he came upon a door that was locked from the inside and he proceeded to knock on the door announcing himself as “police” and “policia.” After several minutes, the door opened and alleged offenders Antonio Brigante, 42, and Carlito Brigante, 25, appeared. These men were taken into custody until the search was completed. They were each charged with three counts of aggravated assault.
According to the report, two witnesses were detained. EMS arrived and transported three victims to the Tift Regional Medical Center emergency room. An officer reported that he escorted EMS with the victims. Detective Brian Cavenaugh arrived at the hospital and took photographs of the victims.
An officer reported that he took the clothing items from each victim and placed them into evidence for safekeeping. The case was turned over to the detectives.
The condition of the people shot is unknown. Late Saturday night, an Tifton police officer responded to a fight involving weapons and shots fired in the 300 block of Old Omega Road.
According to the incident report filed at the Tifton Police Department, an officer arrived on the scene at 11 p.m. and noticed a large amount of blood on the lower portion of the front door and a group of people standing around the residence. York reported that a 20-year-old woman approached him and stated that the offenders were running towards the bottom of the trailer park. At this time, he was able to spot a black male wearing a white T-shirt run behind one of the back trailers on the next row. On observing the offender, the officer reported that he then gave a description and the offender’s direction of travel to all other responding units.
The woman reported to the officer that a group of black males came up to where she and her 21-year-old ex-boyfriend were sitting and attacked the man. According to the incident report, the offenders struck the ex-boyfriend on the head and in the face multiple times with a shotgun. The officer reported that the victim was bleeding profusely from the head and mouth when he arrived.
According to the report, the victim stated that he did not know who the attackers were but recognized them as being three black males. The victim reported that the male with the shotgun had dreadlocks. He was unable to give a description of the other two offenders.
The officer reported that the victim was transported to the hospital and a detective was contacted by Kiser. While on scene, an officer was able to photograph the trailer and surrounding area.
An officer reported that he was able to collect a single red 12-gauge Winchester 00-buck shotgun shell from the north side of the residence. According to the incident report, the shotgun shell was logged into evidence for the detectives to investigate. A list of possible witnesses was provided. However, no one was willing to speak at the time, the report states.
A man reported late Saturday night that he was assaulted while walking near Brookfield Mews apartments on Tifton-Eldorado Road.
According to the incident report filed at the Tifton Police Department, the 24-year-old was walking through the cut behind Brookfield Mews at 11:27 p.m. when three black males jumped out of the bushes and pistol whipped him.
The man reported that two of the black males were 6’ and wearing all black and the third offender was 5’10” wearing black and red clothing. He believes that all three offenders were armed with handguns — one gray semi-automatic 45, one small gray caliber and one gray 38 revolver.
According to the report, the man was beaten in the face.
The offenders then fled the scene in an unknown direction, the report states.
A man reported early Sunday morning that he had been robbed at gunpoint at the Mystik pay phone near his residence in the 1000 block of Ferry Lake Road.
According to the incident report filed at the Tifton Police Department, the 43-year-old man called 911 from the pay phone at 1:21 a.m. asking for help but was disconnected before the language line could be used.
Two officers responded to the incident but found no one at the pay phone when they arrived, the report states.
One of the officers reported that she asked two Hispanic men standing near if any of them had called the police and both men responded that they had not. The officers proceeded to check the area and found nothing. Therefore, both officers went on service for calls.
According to the report, shortly after, the same man called again asking for the police, and two officers, along with Kiser, responded. An officer reported that Kiser arrived first on the scene and noticed one of the Hispanic men another officer questioned earlier leaving the pay phone.
According to the report, he was very intoxicated but seemed to be explaining that someone had robbed him. Unable to speak English, he used his hands to indicate a pistol. A translator from the police department was brought to the scene to translate.
The man reported to the translator that two young men robbed him while he was at the pay phone. One of the offenders was a short white male with a bald head, chubby and wearing black pants and a white shirt. The other was a tall black male with low-cut hair wearing a gray shirt, gray pants and a necklace.
The man reported that the white male pulled out a gun and spoke to him in Spanish while the black male pulled up his shirt to show that he also had a gun. According to the man, his money was located in his Bible. Not realizing the money was in the Bible, the offenders threw it down onto the ground when the man handed it to them and fled through Red Bird Mobile Home Park.
In other crimes reported to the Tift County Sheriff’s Office:
• A man who works at Big Daddy’s T-shirt and Gifts at 2721 U.S. Highway 41 S. reported early Saturday morning that a black male robbed him of cash and ran out the front door.
• A man who lives on Grove Street in Ty Ty reported that four black males entered his residence early Saturday morning and attempted to rob him.
• A man reported Saturday afternoon that he was walking on Bill Bowen Road when three people jumped him and stole money from him.
• A deputy responding to an alarm call just after midnight Sunday to Sonny Food Mart on U.S. Highway 82 E. discovered that the front door of the business had been broken and someone had burglarized the business.
• An Omega man who had been transported to Tift Regional Medical Center reported late Saturday that he was cleaning his closet when a gun fell over and fired a shot that struck him under his left arm.
• A deputy arrived at Gen Earl’s on Tifton-Eldorado Road early Sunday morning to find that the front glass of the building had been broken and the store had been burglarized.
• A deputy arrived at Eldorado Food Mart on U.S. Highway 41 South to find that the store had been burglarized.
• A deputy responded to Sugar Street in the area of Second Avenue Monday afternoon to reports that a group of black males were in the roadway with a rifle. According to the report, the men had left before the deputy arrived, but the deputy found a Bushmaster rifle lying in a yard in the area and took the gun in as evidence.
