TIFTON — The Irwin County Clerk of Superior Court has turned herself in to answer accusations that she used her position to steal money from the Irwin County government.
Sharon Martin turned herself in to authorities after the Georgia Bureau of Investigation filed two warrants charging her with theft by conversion.
District Attorney Paul Bowden said that Martin is accused of writing two checks from an account used by her office and depositing them into a personal account.
“According to information on the warrant, it looks like Mrs. Martin wrote two checks, one for about $14,000 and the other for just over $3,400,” Bowden said.
Bowden said that Martin voluntarily stepped down from her position as the clerk and that she is out of jail on bond.
Martin could be removed permanently from her position as clerk if convicted of the charges by a state ethics panel headed up by the governor and the attorney general.
