Child mauled by pit bull

By Angie Thompson/senior reporter

TY TY — A 5-year-old Ty Ty boy was mauled in the face by a pit bull dog Wednesday afternoon and his father bitten on the arm before the dog was shot to death by two deputies it also charged.

Details of the incident were sketchy late Wednesday afternoon as deputies and animal control personnel involved in investigating the incident continued to gather information and complete their reports.

According to David Haire, public relations officer for the Tift County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened at 140 Davis St. in Ty Ty, the home of Larry Pullen. Emergency responders received the call shortly after 2 p.m.

Deputies arrived at approximately the same time as the ambulance that took the 5-year-old boy to Tift Regional Medical Center. Pullen told deputies that the dog came into his yard and bit the child in the face and then bit him on the arm as he was scooping his 2-year-old away from danger. Then, the dog lunged aggressively toward a deputy, who fired a shot into the dog in self-defense. The dog survived to charge another deputy, who also shot the dog.

The name of the 5-year-old boy was not available late Wednesday afternoon and his condition could not be determined. Haire did say that his injuries were substantial.

Pullen could not be reached for comment.
