13 vehicles broken into; shots fired into house

TIFTON — Thirteen vehicles were reported broken into Monday, and a woman reported discovering that someone had shot into her home several times.

Incidents reported to the Tift County Sheriff’s Office include:

• A woman who lives in the 600 block of Isabella-Nashville Road reported that someone shot into her home, which caused damage to the front and back doors and a wall of the residence. The deputy who was called to the scene collected six pellets from the kitchen area.

• A man who lives in the 1700 block of Eastman Drive reported that someone had broken out the windshield of his green 1996 Chevy S-10. Nothing was reported missing.

• A woman who lives in the 300 block of U.S. Highway 125 S. reported that someone entered her white 1995 GMC Jimmy and stole items valued at $500.

• A man who lives on Deer Avenue reported that someone entered his neighbor’s vehicle without their permission.

• A man who lives on Hunter’s Wood Avenue reported that someone entered his vehicle and stole a Dell laptop computer valued at $1,500.

• A man who lives on Deer Avenue reported that someone entered his vehicle and stole $575 worth of firearms.

• A man who lives in the 500 block of Brighton Road reported that someone broke the back passenger window of his 2006 Toyota Avalon and stole a bag of clothes.

• A woman who lives on Hunter’s Wood Avenue reported that someone entered her 2001 Ford Expedition and stole a GPS system valued at $500 and a pair of Maui sunglasses valued at $300.

Incidents reported to the Tifton Police Dept. include:

• A woman who lives in the 800 block of East 40th Street reported that someone entered her vehicle and stole a red velour pocketbook with a flowered print that contained miscellaneous papers and some of her identification cards.

• A man who lives in the 400 block of East 40th Street reported that someone broke the driver’s side window of his truck and stole a Dell laptop computer and a black carrying case valued at $1,500.

• A man who lives in the 800 block of East 40th Street reported that someone had entered his vehicle and stole body spray, money, the key to his vehicle and an I-Pod with a total estimated value of $360.

  • $5M investment to find tax cheats proposed

    In a rough economy, Georgia’s leaders are looking to collect every nickel owed to the state.
    A budget proposal from Republican Gov. Nathan Deal would spend roughly $5 million annually on a first-of-its-kind database meant to identify people who steal the identities of others and use that information to falsely claim tax rebates from Georgia authorities. The budget plan, which received initial approval from House lawmakers, is now under review by the state Senate.
    “If everyone pays what they rightfully owe, we can all pay less,” said Republican Rep. Larry O’Neal, the House majority leader and a proponent of tightening tax enforcement.

    Lt. Dennis Reese with the Tift County Sheriff’s Office announced Saturday that he’s considering throwing his hat into the race for sheriff.
    Reese, with over 20 years of experience in law enforcement, stated, “I’ve been employed with the TCSO for nearly 25 years and have been in a leadership position for the last 18 years. Since that time, I’ve grown to love it with a deep passion. I was once told that you get into this business for one of two reasons: You either love it or you’re crazy. I guess I’m both.”

  • Whitney Houston, superstar of records, films, dies

    Whitney Houston, who ruled as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, has died. She was 48.

    Houston's publicist, Kristen Foster, said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unknown.
