TIFTON —
The Tifton City Council will discuss gas rates and solid waste collection and disposal rates at a called meeting at 4 p.m. Monday and then swear in a new library board member during its regular meeting.
Items to be voted on during the meeting include amended alcoholic beverage licenses for American Legion, Inc., McKenney Carter Post #559 and Del Sol Restaurant; a new alcoholic beverage license for Publix Super Markets; and an ordinance providing for Internet cafes.
Also on the agenda are resolutions authorizing the city manager to enter into an agreement with the Georgia Department of Transportation for maintenance of "certain highways within the city limits" and to enter into contract negotiations with ESG Operations Inc. for operation, maintenance and management of the water and wastewater treatment facilities; an amendment to solid waste collection and disposal rates; and a contract with the Georgia DOT for construction of RDC Road.
In other business the council is expected to hear a report on bids for a Community Development Block Grant providing for southside sewer improvements between 17th Street and Golden Road.
The council also plans to go into executive session to discuss personnel, real estate and legal matters.

Two Tift County High School seniors have been honored as 2013 Georgia Scholars by the Georgia Department of Education. Masoom (Amy) Chainani and Sara Johnson. They are among only 115 seniors in the entire state who have qualified for this honor, which has extremely strict criteria.

Downtown Farmer's Market opens Saturday
The Downtown Development Authority has announced the 2013 opening of the Downtown Tifton Farmer’s Market May 18 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The market, located on the platform of the historical Tift Terminal Railway Museum, will feature the new streetscape including enhanced landscaping, new sidewalks for easy accessibility and so much more.

UGA Tifton Campus funding approved
When Gov. Nathan Deal signed the budget recently passed by the Georgia state legislature, a long-awaited renovation project for the University of Georgia Tifton Campus was finally moved forward.The budget includes $4.7 million for the renovation of the Tift building on the UGA Tifton Campus. The building, which has been vacant for years, will eventually house administrative offices as well as offices for key support personnel and new scientific positions. - Police report for May 16
