Tifton-Tift Co. Library Foundation to host Neil Berg’s ‘100 Years of Broadway’

TIFTON — Neil Berg’s widely acclaimed “100 Years of Broadway,” a musical revue of Broadway’s most celebrated shows featuring a dazzling cast of five Broadway stars accompanied by an all-star New York band, is coming on Thursday, Sept. 13 to the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center.

Sponsored by the Tifton-Tift County Public Library Foundation, the event includes a catered, black-tie optional dinner before the performance, or tickets may be purchased for the show only.

“This revue features some of the best songs from the best Broadway shows, all sung by some of the most talented performers working today singing many of the hit songs that they have sung on Broadway,” says San Francisco theater critic Jerry Friedman.

“100 Years of Broadway” recreates the greatest moments from the finest shows of the past century and features the actual stars of shows such as “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Les Miserables,” “Cats,” “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “It Ain’t Nothin’ but the Blues,” “Sunset Boulevard,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Jekyll & Hyde.”

These performers light up the stage with songs from the hit shows in which they starred. Musical director and pianist Neil Berg presents lively arrangements of Broadway classics as well as thrilling numbers from Broadway’s newest hit shows.

Tickets are $75 each for the dinner and show, and are $35 each for the show only. Dinner/show tickets must be purchased by Sept. 7. Show only tickets will be available up to show time. The dinner begins at 6:30 p.m., and the show starts at 8 p.m.

Tickets may be purchased online at ugatiftonconference.org and at several local businesses, including Traditions, The Big Store, Glynn Hendricks Interiors, The Cabin Shop, Ameris Bank, At Home on 12th, and at Melanie & Jessie in Sylvester.

Tickets are also available from any member of the Library Foundation board of directors, chaired by Dr. Hal Henderson. Information is available at 229-386-2237.

Past productions of this popular show have featured such stars as Betty Buckley, Liz Callaway and Ben Vereen, among others. Along with Neil Berg, the Tifton production is scheduled to feature Carter Calvert, Steve Blanchard, Ron Bohmer, Sandra Joseph and Ted Louis Levy.

The cast is subject to change based upon possible Broadway and touring developments.

Carter Calvert is best known for originating her role in the Tony-nominated “It Ain’t Nothin’ but the Blues” on Broadway. The New York Times wrote, “Carter Calvert effervesces: Her voice echoes chimes in the night,” and “her smoldering grip on ‘Fever’ is positively dangerous.”

She also toured Europe in “Smokey Joe’s Café,” played Grizabella in the national tour of “Cats,” and appeared as the title role in “Always, Patsy Cline.”

Her television credits include “The Late Show with David Letterman,” “The Rosie O'Donnell Show” and “The Today Show.” She has opened for Liza Minnelli, The Temptations, Chubby Checker and Marilyn McCoo.

Calvert is also an accomplished voice-over artist and can be seen in numerous national commercials including Wendy’s, Voom, MTV and Charles Schwab. She is currently the voice of Kindle.

Steve Blanchard has starred on Broadway in “Beauty and the Beast,” “Camelot,” “The Three Musketeers” and “A Christmas Carol.” He has performed in the national tours of “Phantom of the Opera,” “Camelot,” “West Side Story,” “Hans Christian Andersen” and “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.”

Blanchard’s Off Broadway work includes “Johnny Guitar,” “Frankenstein,” “Moby Dick” and “An Oak Tree.” His TV credits include the network series “Ed,” “Third Watch,” “Law and Order,”“Police Story,” “Sunset Beat,” “Another World,” “The Guiding Light,” “One Life to Live” and “Rapmaster Ronnie” for HBO.

He is preparing for a national tour of “Little House on the Prairie” starring opposite Melissa Gilbert.

Ron Bohmer has starred on Broadway and in national tours as the Phantom in “The Phantom Of The Opera,” as Joe Gillis in “Sunset Boulevard” (Jefferson Award nomination), as “The Scarlet Pimpernel” (National Broadway Theatre Award nomination), as Alex in “Aspects Of Love” (L.A. Robby Award), the evil Sir Percival Glyde in “The Woman in White,” Enjolras in “Les Miserables,” Fyedka in “Fiddler on the Roof”and as Coach Bolton in the cultural phenomenon “Disney’s High School Musical.”

He most recently starred on Broadway as Father in the critically acclaimed revival of “Ragtime,” a role he originated at the Kennedy Center

His television roles include “Law & Order SVU,” “Rescue Me,” “Ryan’s Hope,” “One Life to Live” and “As The World Turns.”

Sandra Joseph has performed for millions starring in one of the best-known female roles in Broadway history: Christine Daae in “The Phantom of the Opera.” She played the role for a decade on Broadway and across the country to critical acclaim. She has the honor of being “Phantom’s” leading lady on Broadway longer than any other actress in the show's quarter-century history.

While she continues to perform, her newest roles include teacher, writer and speaker. Her mission of inspiring people to find their authentic voice has brought her to teaching a five-day workshop at New York’s Omega Institute and giving keynote presentations for Fortune 500 companies.

She has been seen on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” on CNN, “The Today Show,” “The Early Show,” “Dateline” and “The View,” as well as “Law and Order,” “Law and Order Criminal Intent,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “One Life to Live” and “As the World Turns.”

Ted Louis Levy’s Broadway debut was in the hit “Black & Blue.” He collaborated with George C. Wolfe and Gregory Hines on the choreography of “Jelly's Last Jam,” for which he received a Tony nomination, Drama Desk nomination and the 1993 Outer Critics Circle Award. He received an Emmy Award for his television debut performance in the PBS special “Precious Memories,” and appeared in Spike Lee's “Malcolm X” for his film debut.

His production of “Ted Levy and Friends,” directed by Gregory Hines, celebrated Levy as one of America's premier tap dance artists. He assisted in the choreography of Broadway's Tony Award-winning hit “Bring In ‘Da Noise! Bring In ‘Da Funk!”

Levy appeared in the movie “Bojangles” with Hines, returning to Broadway in Susan Stroman & Harry Conick Jr.'s “Thou Shalt Not.” He portrayed The Mikado in The Ford Theater's production of “The Hot Mikado,” for which he won a Helen Hayes Award.

Neil Berg is the composer/lyricist of the hit off-Broadway musical “The Prince and the Pauper,” which ran for two years in New York City. The New York Times described it as “soaring on the wings of theatrical fun.”

Berg is currently writing the music for the Broadway-bound musical “Grumpy Old Men,” based on the hit film.

Two of Berg’s new musicals have been selected for the prestigious New York Musical Theater Festival: “The Man Who Would Be King,” a musical realization of Rudyard Kipling’s novella, and “Tim and Scrooge,” a sequel to “A Christmas Carol.”

The Tifton event is a fundraiser for the Tifton-Tift County Public Library Foundation, a 501(c)3 charitable organization that supports the local library. The foundation has awarded more than $60,000 to the county library for such initiatives as children’s programming, summer reading programs, books and other materials.
