Writing workshop held at Tift Co. High

TIFTON — Dr. Bobbie Robinson, dean of the School of Liberal Arts and professor of English at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, recently conducted a writing workshop in Dr. Shelley Fandel’s Advanced Placement U.S. history classes at Tift County High School. Students are actively preparing for the National Advanced Placement Exam.

The Advanced Placement course is a college-level history course, and students earn college credit for U.S. history if they pass the AP exam. A major portion of the AP test is essay writing.

In addition to taking a multiple choice exam, students must write historical essays in order to pass the exam. Dr. Robinson spent the day with students instructing them on how to write historically. Students interacted with primary and secondary historical sources in order to make a coherent historical argument. Students left the session with a better understanding of how to write historically.

The national exam will be administered in May, and students are engaged in a variety of learning experiences to prepare them for the exam. Activities range from analyzing documents to holding debates to conducting simulations on classroom iPads.
