Arts in Black Festival 2013 to be held April 5-7

TIFTON — The annual Arts in Black Festival will be held this year from Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 7.

Beginning the festival will be a talent show at 7 p.m. Friday, April 5 at the downtown Tift Theatre. Talent exhibitions will vary and participants from the county are encouraged to show off their talents during the festival. Tickets will be $8 and will be available at the door. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for the general public. Talent show winners will receive prizes and will perform at the festival Saturday, April 6.

The opening ceremonies for the festival begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 6 at Fulwood Park, reflecting on the past 27 years the festival has been commencing in Tift County. Performances begin at 11 a.m. on the main stage as local talent and the main attraction will entertain the crowds throughout the day. While stage one will feature the main attraction, stage two will showcase local talents and performances from the talent show.

This year’s children area will feature powerhouse entertainment complete with clowns, dancing, music, balloons and face painting will be available. One desired attraction will return — the Barrel Train Ride. Each of the cars will be equipped with a steering wheel and a horn to keep the little ones busy having fun while being part of the ride, not just on the ride. The Barrel Train is an innovative attraction destined to keep the young children entertained throughout the day; it’s a favorite and perfect for this year’s festival.

As usual, food and arts and crafts vendors will be available to complete the festival atmosphere to be found in Fulwood Park.

On Sunday, April 7, a poetry competition will be held at 3 p.m. at the Tifton Welcome Station, concluding the Arts in Black festivities.

Stand-up comedian Michael Prince will emcee the weekend festivities. He is a Tifton native and has appeared on the nationally acclaimed BET’s Comicview and has toured with HBO’s Def Comedy Jam. His talent has also gained him parts in the Oliver Stone film, “Any Given Sunday,” on the big screen.

Prince has a production and entertainment company, “Big Nose Entertainment,” for up and coming comedians who may need help with booking agents, contracts and other pertinent aspects of the business.

The Arts in Black Festival Committee is extremely excited about the upcoming festival and is encouraging everyone in the community to support the endeavor.

The Arts in Black Festival strives to build bridges within the community and town. Please come out and support the event.
