TIFTON — A deputy is believed to have received only minor injuries when a prisoner he was transporting from the Turner County jail to a doctor’s appointment in Tifton Thursday morning overpowered him in an attempt to escape. Details are sketchy, but the incident is believed to have begun on U.S. Highway 41 North near Tiftarea Academy and ended at the intersection of that highway and Cromer Road with the inmate back in the deputy’s custody. A Turner County investigator on the scene said the man was being held in the Turner County jail on charges of armed robbery of an Ashburn convenience store. More details will be made available as they are received.
