Omega man injured with his own gun

OMEGA — An Omega man was grazed by a bullet as he chased off a potential home invader Wednesday night.

A Colquitt County sheriff’s deputy was called to a house on Sharon Church Road near Omega at 7:58 p.m. Wednesday about a burglary. The deputy spoke with Cody Armstrong, who stated he was at home when someone knocked on his door.

When Armstrong answered the door, an unknown white male was standing in the doorway and asked if Armstrong’s stepfather was there. Armstrong said he told the man his stepfather would be home in a few minutes, but the man tried to push the door open before Armstrong was able to close it.

Armstrong stated he then got his stepfather’s High Point 9mm pistol and went back to the front door. The unknown man continued to beat on the door before Armstrong opened it and pointed the gun at the man, who ran from the scene.

Armstrong told the deputy he went onto the front porch and fired one shot at the unknown man then continued to follow him. Armstrong then tripped and fell on the steps, and he dropped the gun. The unknown man came back and picked it up.

The unknown man fired one shot at Armstrong that hit him in the upper left arm, then he dropped the gun and fled the scene. Armstrong’s shirt was torn, but the bullet grazed his skin, and Colquitt County EMS treated him at the scene.

Several deputies searched the area for the unknown man, but they could not find him. A Cook County K-9 unit was unable to find any sign or track of the man. Deputies found only one shell casing, located on the front porch.
