TIFTON — Students, faculty and staff at J.T. Reddick collected over 7,000 cans of food items and are donating them to Ruth’s Cottage, The Patticake House and the Tifton Food Bank.
Traci Hill, the school’s counselor, said Friday that all schools in the system participated in the food drive.
“Our school has surpassed all expectations,” Hill said.
At J.T. Reddick, each grade level competed against the other to see who could raise the most food. A wager was made that if the fourth graders collected more food, assistant principal Taurence Phillips would do the chicken dance during the Pride Program held in the gym Friday; if fifth graders won, principal Mickey Weldon would do the dance; and if the sixth graders won, both Weldon and Phillips would do the dance.
Students in the fourth grade classes at the school collected the most food, but Friday in the gym, Weldon said he would join and support Phillips and the two danced the chicken dance together.
Hill said that she has noticed how the downturn in the economy has affected students and one way is positive, she said.
“Even kids who don’t have a lot are giving to others,” Hill said. “They realize there’s a drastic need out there and they want to help.”
