TIFTON — Members of “Team Jennifer” have been selling tickets for barbecue plates to help the Jennifer Dees Brown family meet medical expenses after the 31-year-old mother of three young children was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma this year and now needs a stem cell transplant.
Tickets are $7 and plates of Walkers’ BBQ, cole slaw, potato salad, Texas toast, a dessert, a dill pickle and a can of Pepsi can be picked up from 4:30 until 8 p.m. Saturday at Tifton’s Peace Lutheran Church, 604 Tennessee Drive.
Brown’s mother, Sue Dees, said that her daughter was diagnosed with the disease in January when she went to the emergency room after continuing to feel ill with fever, chills and a severe lack of energy. Brown had tests run at Tift Regional Medical Center and then she was sent to a specialists who diagnosed her disease. She went through six months of chemotherapy and then a PET scan showed new growth of the disease and she was sent to Emory to talk with doctors there, according to Dees.
“The doctors at Emory said that her greatest hope for a cure was a stem cell transplant,” Dees said. “Her stem cells have already been harvested at Emory.”
Dees said her daughter was able to come home for Thanksgiving .
“Team Jennifer” is a group of family and friends who have raised money for Brown through an ATV poker run, and yard sale and other projects. Also, according to Dees, the team has raised nearly $6,000 to contribute to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for more research in hopes of curing the diseases.
Brown does have insurance, Dees said, but her treatment so far have cost almost $500,000. The proceeds raised from the barbecue plate sale will help the family with lodging and travel back and forth to Emory. After the transplant, Brown will stay at Emory for two or three weeks and then have to remain in the Atlanta area for several more weeks.
For barbecue tickets, call Janice Dees at 229-392-8997, or visit the offices of D & M Service Center or Reinhardt, Whitley and Sims Attorneys.
