Arrest made in 2008 murder

TIFTON — A 20-year-old Tifton man has been arrested and charged with the murder and armed robbery of a 65-year-old man here last fall.

Law enforcement officers with the Tift County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested Joshua Merrell Woods, 20, 2908 Sixth Ave., early Thursday and charged him with the Nov. 3, 2008 armed robbery and murder of Russell Richardson, 65, who lived on Washington Street.

A TCSO deputy responded at 8:55 p.m. on Nov. 3, 2008, to a location in the 2700 block of Emerson O. Bynes Avenue to find Richardson lying on the sidewalk and bleeding from the chest. The deputy assisted paramedics who transported Richardson to Tift Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Mike Lewis, special agent in charge of the GBI’s Sylvester office, said Thursday an autopsy did indicate the type of weapon used to kill Richardson but he wouldn’t elaborate on what kind of weapon was used.

“We are continuing to pursue leads and gather evidence in the case,” Lewis said. “We can’t release that right now.”

Lewis did say that the weapon used to kill Richardson had not yet been located by law enforcement. He said that robbery was believed to be the motive that lead to Richardson’s death.

Republican gubernatorial nominee Nathan Deal late Thursday released cover pages for 28 years of personal income tax returns, spanning his time in elected office.
But he declined to make public filings for his Gainesville auto salvage business that became the focus of a congressional ethics probe. And tax "schedules" — that would provide more details on things like capital gains and rental income — were not included in the documents the Deal campaign posted online Thursday night.
Deal spokesman Brian Robinson declined to explain why.
