TIFTON —
A group of locals wanting to promote non-violence and the importance of staying in school is presenting a community event Sunday at Mott-Litman Gym on Emerson O. Bynes Avenue, featuring a performance by YouTube sensation Emmanuel and Phillip Hudson of Atlanta.
Jamiz Redding of Tifton will also be performing, and free school supplies will be given away. The community and surrounding counties are encouraged to attend. This event is being sponsored by Willis Country Meats; Jatin Patel is the owner.
The event starts at 2 p.m. with a softball tournament, food, fun, games and music. The concert and talent show will kick off around 5:30 p.m. inside the air-conditioned gym.
Anyone can enter the talent show (15 participants are needed). Admission for the event is $10 and children under the age of eight get in free.
Jerriel Taylor, Kevin Howard, Chantel Brown and Ale Vaga all got together one day and decided that they wanted to put on an event to help encourage the community to stop the violence and join together. Brown stated that they wanted to give away free school supplies also because there are some kids who are not so fortunate as others.
“We need the whole community to come out and support this event,” Taylor said.
He stated that Emmanuel and Phillip will be performing live “Ratchet” and “Asking All Them Questions.” He said they go around to schools and colleges promoting staying in school and the importance of education.
“This event is the first in many trying to raise awareness about drugs and violence in our community,” Taylor stated.
Emmanuel and Phillip are from the Atlanta area. Emmanuel attends Albany State University and Phillip attends Clark University. They became a major hit on YouTube with their song “Ratchet” with over 30 million views. They also premiered the song on the BET video countdown show, 106 & Park.
“Their songs are funny and comical, but the message is loud and clear,” Taylor said.
Brown added that their songs are about real-life situations. She stated that a lot of younger children enjoy their songs.
Brown said the main purpose behind this event is to stop the violence and bullying. She noted that Emmanuel and Phillip promote this message as well.
“All kids need to stick together,” she stated.
Taylor said a special thanks goes to The Gazette, Carmike Cinemas for donating movie tickets for a giveaway, Hi-Lite Auto Sales, K & M Game Room/Hangout, Willis Country Meats, Tift County Coroner Steve Wood and Stevi B’s for donating the food.
“The community is getting behind us,” he stated. “We want to see over a thousand people out there.”
He added that this event is for every ethnic group.
Wood stated that he wants to help out with this event because Taylor and his group are trying to spread the word to stop the violence and to stay in school.
“We’re behind this one hundred percent,” he said.
To enter the talent show, contact Taylor at 402-9718 or Brown at 256-8088 by Friday. Also, to help sponsor this event, to donate more school supplies or for more information, contact Taylor, Brown or Willis Country Meats at 387-0044.
