ABAC to help celebrate 35th anniversary of Sunbelt Expo

TIFTON — The Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition at Spence Field near Moultrie will celebrate its 35th anniversary this year and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College has been a part of the Expo from its beginning.  This year, the lively sounds of the Thundering Herd, an exciting Expo Scavenger Hunt, and information sessions from the college’s Georgia Museum of Agriculture are just some of the events that ABAC will offer at lot B7 on Oct. 16-18.

“We always look forward to the Expo because we get to connect with a lot of prospective students as well as alumni," Director of Public Relations Ashley Mock said.  "We are excited to feature our student performers and the Georgia Museum of Agriculture. "

Each day the ABAC exhibit will feature performers including the duo of Scott Fields and Tyler Lewis and Andy Hicks from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on Oct. 16, the ABAC Jazz Choir from 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 17, and four performances of the always-popular Thundering Herd Pep Band from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Oct. 18.

ABAC took over the operation of the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village in Tifton on July 1, 2010, and now the Museum provides educational opportunities as a part of the ABAC campus.  Information sessions about the Museum will take place at 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 16-17, and two more information sessions will be held on Oct. 18 at 9:30 a.m. and 12:45 p.m.

The ABAC Ambassadors will host the daily shows on the ABAC stage and will also sell ABAC souvenir t-shirts, sweat shirts, caps and other merchandise.  They will also spend each day recruiting future ABAC students from the thousands of high schoolers who visit the Expo.

"No one sells ABAC like our very own students," Mock said.  "The Ambassadors are excited about this opportunity to share their experiences with ABAC students of the future."

Admissions representatives and faculty members will also be on hand each day to answer questions about the new bachelor's degree programs at the college.  Currently, the college has a number of bachelor degree programs including the unique Rural Studies program, forestry, and the college’s newest four-year degree in biology.

ABAC will also host the Expo Scavenger Hunt for middle school and high school students.  The students follow clues to find answers to questions posted on the Expo web site at http://sunbeltexpo.com/special-events/expo-scavenger-hunt/  Prizes will be awarded after the Expo.

The Expo began as a series of small farm equipment shows on the ABAC campus in the 1960s.  It moved to Spence Field in 1978.  The college has exhibited at the show every year near the main entrance.

The Expo is open 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Oct. 16-17 and 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Oct. 18.  The agricultural-based trade show features 1,200 exhibitors showcasing the latest in farming technology.  Admission is $10 per person per day or $20 for a multi-day ticket.  Children 12-and-under are admitted free with their parents.
