TIFTON —
Fortunately no one was injured when multiple shots were fired at a person Thursday evening in the area of Maple Street and Bellview Avenue. A suspect in the case is in custody on an unrelated charge but police are continuing their investigation.
According to an incident report filed at the Tifton Police Department, Officer David Gay responded to the Maple Street area to reports of a black male chasing another black male down the street and shooting at him.
Gay wrote in his report that when he arrived, an unknown person pointed to a pile of yard debris on Beech Lane, which is between Ermine and Bellview avenues, and told him there was a gun in the pile. Gay found a black Hi Point 40 Smith and Wesson handgun there. He took the gun into evidence.
Detective Lee Dunston of the TPD said Friday that he continues to interview people and investigate the case. He said that a suspect in the case was arrested on an unrelated warrant a short time after the incident.
“We encourage anyone who may have witnessed this incident to give us a call at the Tifton Police Department,” Dunston said.
The TPD’s telephone number is 382-3132.

$5M investment to find tax cheats proposed
In a rough economy, Georgia’s leaders are looking to collect every nickel owed to the state.
A budget proposal from Republican Gov. Nathan Deal would spend roughly $5 million annually on a first-of-its-kind database meant to identify people who steal the identities of others and use that information to falsely claim tax rebates from Georgia authorities. The budget plan, which received initial approval from House lawmakers, is now under review by the state Senate.
“If everyone pays what they rightfully owe, we can all pay less,” said Republican Rep. Larry O’Neal, the House majority leader and a proponent of tightening tax enforcement. - More Local News Headlines
