TIFTON —
Over 1,200 people from Tifton and surrounding counties showed up at the University of Georgia Tifton Campus Conference Center Monday to apply for a job with Publix, says District Manager Keith Gilbert. A job fair was held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.
Gilbert said Tuesday that so far that morning, not as many people had come in to apply compared to Monday’s crowd; however, they’re anticipating about 2,000 total applicants. He noted that people were lining up as early as 6:45 a.m. Monday at the conference center. He stated that the “greeting room” was packed full.
Publix had advertised that they were hiring experienced cake decorators, meat cutters, bakers, deli, produce, seafood, bakery and stock clerks, entry level and customer service.
Gilbert said the store manager for the Tifton location is Greg Boxx. He and Boxx told The Gazette that they were very pleased with the outcome at the job fair.
“Tifton has been very accommodating to us,” Boxx added.
“We’re excited,” Gilbert said, noting that Tifton is a very loving community, starting with the mayor and going on down from there.
He said others who are interested in applying for the Tifton location can apply at any existing Publix and inform the store manager that they’re interested in working at the Tifton location. Also, people can apply once the store is officially open for business.
Gilbert said Publix, which is located next to the old Winn Dixie building (soon to be T.J. Maxx) and the Tifton Mall on Virginia Avenue, is expected to open in late August, depending on construction.
According to a brochure on the history of Publix, which was available to applicants at the job fair, Publix is “the largest employee-owned supermarket in the United States with more than 150,000 associates and more than 1,050 stores.”
