Zeta Phi Beta sponsors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. contest

TIFTON — Youth from the local community and surrounding counties have the opportunity to participate in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Oratorical Contest, sponsored by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. There is no fee to participate.

The contest will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 at Macedonia Freewill Baptist Church, located at 2502 Highland Ave. in Tifton.

The following are the official rules:

• Contests must write and recite an oration centered on the topic, “Nonviolence: My Choice as a Way of Life.” The orator must speak for at least two minutes and not exceed four minutes.

• The oration must incorporate at least two principles of nonviolence from the following list — Dr. King’s six principals of nonviolence:

- Nonviolence is a way of life for courageous people. It is active nonviolent resistance to evil...

- Nonviolence seeks to win friendship and understanding. The end result of nonviolence is redemption and reconciliation...

- Nonviolence seeks to defeat injustice, not people. Nonviolence recognizes that evildoers are also victims.

- Nonviolence holds that suffering can educate and transform. Nonviolence willingly accepts the consequences of its acts...

- Nonviolence chooses love instead of hate. Nonviolence resists violence of the spirit as well as the body. Nonviolent love is active, not passive. Nonviolent love does not sink to the level of the hater. Love restores community and resists injustice. Nonviolence recognizes the fact that all life is interrelated.

- Nonviolence believes that the universe is on the side of justice. The nonviolent resister has deep faith that justice will eventually win.

• In order to participate, contestants must register from now until 15 minutes prior to the contest on Jan. 26. Categories for participation are: grades K-3, grades 4-6, grades 7-8 and grades 9-12.

• Cash prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners in each category:

- Grades K-3: $20, $15 and $10
