Tiftarea Academy celebrates 100 days of school

TIFTON — Tiftarea Academy students celebrated the “100th Day of School” Wednesday. That morning, smiling students from pre-kindergarten to second grade released 100 balloons into the air after counting by 10 to 100. A colorful stream of balloons drifted up and away into the cloudy sky as loud cheers and claps could be heard from the students pointing and staring wide-eyed from the ground.

Elementary Principal Beth Langston said the balloon release is something that they do annually on the 100th day of school. During the day, students also participated in other fun, creative activities, such as drawing pictures of what they think they will look like at 100 years old and writing stories about being 100 years old.

Langston pointed to several rows of Ziploc bags hanging on the wall in the hallway. The bags were filled with different items that amounted to 100. Some bags contained popcorn, Reese’s miniature peanut butter cups, rice, hair bows, pine cones and many other interesting items.

Langston added that students who earned 100 AR (Accelerated Reader) points would be treated to a hot fudge cake from Shoney’s.

Also, Tift County State Court Judge Larry Mims was on campus Wednesday morning. He spoke to the fourth grade students about the judicial branch of government and the importance of serving on a jury. This is a service he does each year at local schools for his First Impressions Project.

Langston stated that Mims leaves the students with a mock trial scenario that they will have to perform at the Tift County Courthouse. She stated that all student participants in such mock trial exercises held in Tift County are asked to write an essay about the experience. She said the winners will receive tickets to Wild Adventures Theme Park in Valdosta.

“He’s a good role model,” Langston stated about Mims.
