N.H. Layton

TIFTON — Needham Henry “N.H.” Layton, 88, of Tifton, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2010, at Tift Health Care. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Waterloo Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeff Pangle and the Rev. Donnie Wright officiating. Burial will follow at Waterloo Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Albritton-Beaumont Funeral Directors.

Pallbearers will be Layton Gatewood, Nathan Doane, Justin Doane, Harold Bowman, Lamar Bowman, Casey Joyner, Lamar Joyner, Harris Gladdin, J.W. Underwood and Daniel Forsman.

Mr. Layton was born in Waterloo Feb. 27, 1922 to Henry Looney Layton and Cora Lee Layton, both deceased. He was the retired overseer of Layton Farms and a member of Waterloo Baptist Church. After his retirement, he truly enjoyed spending time at his cabin in Suwannee, Fla.

Mr. Layton enjoyed running the Layton family grocery store in Waterloo and being the owner/operator of the family farm. Also, he enjoyed traveling, fishing and cooking at the Long County Hunting Club. He was also an avid Georgia Bulldog fan. Mr. Layton attended ABAC in 1940 and 1941 where he played basketball and received an associate’s degree in agriculture. He attended the University of Georgia in 1942 and 1943 where he was in the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and he graduated with a bachelor of science in agriculture. Mr. Layton was in the United States Navy during the years of 1944 and 1945 as a Master’s of Arms.

Among his survivors are his two daughters and son-in-law, Sherry Layton Gatewood of Tifton, and Ramona and Scott Doane of De Leon Springs, Fla.; his son and daughter-in-law, Howard and Michelle Layton of Tifton; his grandsons, Layton Gatewood of Athens and Justin and Nathan Doane, both of DeLeon Springs, Fla.; his granddaughters, Ginger Gatewood and Lindsey and Cora Lee Layton, all of Tifton.
