Johnny Marvin Powell Jr.

TIFTON — Johnny Marvin Powell Jr., 65, of Tifton died Friday, Feb. 1, 2013 at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. The Rev. Danny Edwards will officiate with burial to follow at Waterloo Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.

Mr. Powell was born on June 21, 1947 in Albany and was the son of Marvin Eastman Powell and Sybil Mae Williams Powell, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by four sisters and two great-grandchildren, J.J. “Julio” Gutierrez III and Emmanuel Garcia. He was a retired correctional officer with Colquitt County and was a member of the Peace Officers Association. He served in the United States Army in Vietnam and received the Purple Heart. He was also a sponsor for the Children’s Miracle Network and was of the Holiness faith.

Mr. Powell is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Timothy William and Chrystal Powell of Valdosta and John Anthony and Amy Powell of North Carolina; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles R. “Toby” and Frances Powell of Tifton; four grandchildren, Krystal Powell, Kayla Powell, Kristy Garcia and April Gutierrez; and eight great-grandchildren, Keira Maddox, Chazz Barfield, J.J. “Julio” Gutierrez Jr., Joel Gutierrez, Jasmin Gutierrez, Marcelino “M.J.” Garcia, Jose Garcia Jr. and Joshua Garcia.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial gifts may be made to the children’s charity of your choice.

Arrangements for the Powell family are under the care and direction of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.
