Naomi Holmes

RAHWAY, N.J. — Naomi Holmes, 56, of Rahway, N.J., departed this life Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010 in Macon. Born Oct. 11, 1953 in Georgia, Naomi was the youngest of 12 children of the late Rev. P. L. and Ethel C. Holmes. She was educated in the Tifton school system and graduated from Washington Irvington High School in New York. She earned an associate’s degree in criminology from Bronx Community College. Professionally, for more than 30 years, Ms. Holmes dedicated her talents to the United States Postal Service in New York City. Her love for life and people was always evident in the service she provided her customers.

Naomi was a faithful member of Heard A.M.E. Church in Roselle, N.J., and was active on the Steward Board, Finance Committee, Sick and Shut-in Ministry, Roselle Interfaith Council, Senior Choir, Peaches of Georgia and Tuesday meetings. She was selected as ‘Woman of the Year’ at Heard A.M.E. Church in 2008. Ms. Holmes was happiest serving the Lord and singing His praises. She enjoyed working in the church, in the community and volunteered with the J.A.F. Prayer Warriors.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, Rudine Holmes Williams and Catherine Holmes, and one brother, Wallace Holmes. She leaves to cherish her memories, her son, Machel Jemarlin Barnes; her granddaughter, Jaidan; four sisters, Helen R. Adkins (Taylor) of Charlotte, N.C., Bertha Blanchard of Columbus, Nadine Pittman of New York, and the Rev. Mildred Denson (James) of Macon; three brothers, Michael Holmes, Larry Holmes and Nathaniel Holmes, all of Miami, Fla.; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and other relatives and dear friends.

Homegoing services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Heard A.M.E. Church, 310 E. Eighth Ave., Roselle, N.J. The wake will take place from 7 to 9 tonight at the church. Burial will be held at Rosedale Cemetery in Linden, N.J.
