Robert Norris

AMERICUS — Dr. Robert Allen Norris, 87, of Americus, died Monday, Sept. 6, 2010 at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center. A native of Waycross, Dr. Norris was born Dec. 16, 1922, the son of the late Robert P. and Nell Marie Norris. Dr. Norris served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II. Dr. Norris had a Ph.D. in biology and was a professor at Valdosta State University, Rutgers University and University of California at Berkeley. He was the curator of the Herbarium, which he donated to the college, at Georgia Southwestern State University.

Funeral services will be private and held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to GSW Foundation, P.O. Box 926, Americus, GA  31709 with a notation in the memo area for Dr. Robert Norris, or to Sumter Humane Society, 108 Industrial Blvd., Americus, GA 31719.

Mr. Norris is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, William H. and Vera Norris of Dixie; two sisters and brother-in-law, Nell N. Ireland of Americus and Elizabeth N. and Jack Conoly of Tallahassee, Fla.; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Norris.
