CHARLESTOWN, W.Va. — Norma Carolyn Bishop Hess, 78, of Charlestown, W.Va., died Friday, Feb. 5, 2010 at a local nursing home.
Carolyn was born Oct. 19, 1931 in Tift County the daughter of the late Chester L. and Mary Paulk Bishop. She was a graduate of Norman Park High School in Norman Park. She worked five years for Southern Bell telephone company, then joined the Women’s Army Corp (WACS) in 1955 for two years. She continued working for the U.S. government (FEMA) until her retirement in 1986, with 31 years of service. She was of the Methodist faith.
Along with her husband of 49 years, Charles R. Hess of Charlestown, Mrs. Hess is survived by one step-son, Gregory A. Hess of Cumberland, Md.; one step-daughter, Deborah K. Hess of Ellicott City, Md.; three sisters, Laverne B. Kerr and Ann B. Sutton, both of Tifton, and Jean B Scott of Jesup; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. A brother, Carl L. Bishop of Alabama, preceded her in death.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Hebron Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Jones Funeral Home in Winchester, Va. Online condolences may be left at www.jonesfuneralhomes.com. Jones Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
