Haynes Moorhead

FITZGERALD — Henry “Haynes” Moorhead, 87, of Fitzgerald, died Friday, Feb. 5, 2010 in Franklin, Tenn. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Fitzgerald, with Dr. Mike Ruffin and the Rev. Steve Stokes officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Paulk Funeral Home in Fitzgerald.

Mr. Moorhead was born April 19, 1922 in Fitzgerald to the late Henry Augustus and Grace Haynes Moorhead. He graduated from Fitzgerald High School in 1940 and later enlisted in the U.S. Army, and served in the Pacific during World War II. Upon returning to Fitzgerald, he farmed his family land and served as chairman of the Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Committee and was a long time member of the Ben Hill Farm Bureau Committee. Following his retirement, Mr. Moorhead enjoyed traveling the country with his wife in their RV, and creating beautiful furniture for his family in his wood-working shop. Mr. Moorhead was a Mason for over 60 years, and a member and deacon of First Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Baraca Sunday School class. He was also a former member, deacon and Sunday School teacher of Mount Olive Baptist Church. More recently, he enjoyed being a member of the McDonald’s Coffee Club.

Mr. Moorhead is survived by his wife of 66 years, Johnnie B. Moorhead of Fitzgerald; daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Bill Caldwell of Franklin, Tenn.; granddaughters, Julie Caldwell of Nashville, Tenn., and Mandee Caldwell of Newnan; great-grandson, Will Caldwell of Nashville, Tenn.; sisters, Mary Frances Brewster of Cedartown and Jackie Young of Savannah; and many nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by three infant daughters and four sisters.
