TIFTON — Vertie Lee Kendrick Purvis, 91, of Tifton, died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at Golden Living Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Albritton-Beaumont Funeral Directors with the Rev. Jimmy Odum and the Rev. Tommy McDonald officiating. Burial will follow at Oakridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Albritton-Beaumont Funeral Home.
Robie Kendrick, Gordon Hughes, Jerry Hobbs, Ed Stout, Ben Barrentine, Jackie Watson and Jerry Ivey will serve as pallbearers. Members of Faithful Sunday School Class of Eastside Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Mrs. Purvis was born in Albertville, Ala. on April 17, 1918. Her parents were the late Thomas Kendrick and Fannie Bell Woodham Kendrick. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph Purvis, who died in 1975; one son, Bennie Purvis, who died in 1998; three brothers, Laverne Kendrick, Harvey (Girley) Kendrick and Seburn Kendrick; and two sisters, Lillian Sumner and Clara Mae Kendrick.
Survivors include her daughter, Dianne Purvis Collins of Tifton; her sister, Irene Watson of Tifton; four grandchildren and their spouses, Andy and Tammy Collins, Russell and Christina Collins, Chad and Paige Purvis, Becky and Walt Carr; and eight great-grandchildren, Jacob, Joshua and Tina Carr, Jackson and Elly Purvis, Ashley and Mitchel Collins and Matthew Collins.
Mrs. Purvis’ family was her greatest joy in life. She always enjoyed cooking for her family and friends and visiting the sick, shut-ins and elderly. Mrs. Purvis was a longtime faithful member of Second Baptist Church and then Eastside Baptist Church.
