Your Opinion: Reader suggests centennial ceremony for courthouse

On Dec. 12, 1912, the cornerstone for the Tift County Courthouse was laid in a Masonic ceremony with full honors. The Beau Arts style Courthouse was completed in 1913, exactly 100 years ago this year.

I would suggest to the City Council and County Commissioners, along with the local Masonic Lodge, that a re-dedication centennial ceremony would be appropriate this year along with an opening of the cornerstone, possibly replacing the cornerstone with a time capsule and planting a "centennial" live oak tree on the lawn.

Suggestions of items to add to the time capsule could be requested and a centennial committee appointed to make the final decision.

This centennial year would also be a great time to remodel and update the Clerk of Superior Court’s office in the south-east corner of the courthouse to protect and save the historical deeds and records and modernize the office by going digital.
