Your Opinion: Celebrate National Farmers' Market Week

This week is National Farmers’ Market Week, and all across the country Americans will be filling bags and baskets with fresh vegetables, fruit and other local goodies. And when they do, they not only improve their own health — they help create a healthy community and local economy.

In Tifton, the Downtown Farmers’ Market will be open this week on Thursday from 4-7 p.m., as it is every First Thursday of the month, year-round. The market just completed another successful summer season of Saturday morning markets — the longest season yet.

The market continues to thrive and grow thanks to dedicated marketgoers, volunteers and the City of Tifton’s Main Street Program, which sponsors the market. Unlike a state-operated market, Tifton’s community market is run by a volunteer steering committee and volunteer market manager. It is financed mostly through donations made at the market (farmers are not charged a fee to participate).

I would personally like to thank volunteers JoBeth Easters Roberts, Abi Daughtry and Willdean Easters McClelland for organizing a children’s activity for nearly every market this year (and traveling all the way from Lenox to do it!). Ellen and Dan Corrie and Emma Lane Rigdon helped manage the market and provided complimentary drinks and treats many times. Richard Burton assisted at almost every market in any way needed. Dr. Bret Wagenhorst, Dave Groff and many others provided goods for the “Welcome/Donation” table to help us raise funds for the market.

The Tifton Terminal Railway Museum graciously provides a perfect old-timey facility for us, and their staff member, Roy, helps farmers and volunteers set up tables and haul items from vehicles.

With continued strong community support, the market can grow and expand. We hope to add more market days throughout the year and also add some programs to bring in new farmers and customers. Keep your eye on the Gazette for our new offerings or join our “Tifton Farmers’ Market” group on Facebook.
