Rant and Rave for March 21, 2008

Just pretending?

“Obama is being criticized to his ties to Reverend Wright, who has made many angry and untrue statements. OK, since Obama is being criticized where is the criticism of John McCain, who for cynical political reasons to appeal to the Christian right took the endorsement of ...John Hagee. Hagee has stated that the Jews brought the Holocaust upon themselves from ‘turning away from the true God.’ That's as bad as anything Wright has said. McCain isn't a Christian conservative, but he pretends to be one.”

Three cheers

“Three big cheers for Ginger Brodie! Her letter to the editor about the Blue Devil mascot struck just the right tone. And the best line was: ‘Be wary of any type of sanctimonious emotions that can spiral into imaginative, hurtful nonsense.’”

Just show up

“Parents, we need to understand our little angels are not always as well behaved as we think. Try just showing up unannounced. You can see everyone in action. We have excellent teachers and parapros that do their jobs well. Do not let one bad one ruin it for all the others.”

Two wrongs

“Re ‘Start at home’: Two wrongs do not make one right! There are other ways to dicipline and educate children than assaulting them and possibly giving them a disease that could be a death sentence! I teach my child how to behave, only for him to go to school and see an authority figure lose her temper and hurt a child. Not to mention the grief the ones that are being responsible adults are catching because of one bad apple.”

Go to the meetings

“Parents of the 8,000 children in Tift County schools, we all need to attend every board meeting. We all must stand together and let them know we expect our children to be safe at school.”

My hero

“This is a rave for Mr. Green. Now lower-income families will have a chance to live among Tift County's elite. Bravo, sir, for you are my hero.”

Think again

“You dare not mess with people’s traditions in a small town. In the mid ‘90s the small- town powers, the same ones fighting for the beloved Blue Devil now, fought progress by defeating a chance to have a second high school. Done correctly this would have improved the opportunities for sports and learning for every student in this community. Go Blue Devil and take your followers with you. Maybe it's time to revisit the possibility of having two high schools.”

Head up

“The only things that I see in the Rant and Rave are bad things for Mrs. Hightower, nothing good. I work with her and she is a very good person and ...this got out of hand. Keep your head up, Mrs. Hightower. I stand with you.”
