It is 6:30 a.m. in the morning. I am sitting in my car in Harvey's parking lot in Fitzgerald, waiting to open the store with my wife.
The air is cool but refreshing and as I look all around the area, it is very quiet. The streets and sidewalks are clear. As I look downtown I can see the signal lights turn from green to yellow and then to red. Every so often a car will come to the intersection. Probably someone heading to work.
I gaze up at the sky and the clouds are moving fast. The sun is just beginning to show itself. As I look directly across the street red lights begin flashing, guard rails at the railroad crossing start to come down. I can hear the engineer of the oncoming train blowing his horn to give warning that he is about to enter the intersection. As the engines pass by, you can hear the clickity-clack of the railroad cars traveling along the tracks.
I am sitting here thinking to myself how wonderful it is to be alive. After having two near-death experiences, each day becomes a blessing. The things that I can see, yet there are those who cannot. I can hear yet there are those who cannot. I can smell the fragrance of fresh flowers growing in the area, yet there are those who cannot smell. I can still walk even though I need the assistance of a walker, and there are those who cannot walk. I still have the use of my mind, for if I didn't I could not write and share with you what I feel. Unfortunately there are also those who have lost the use of their minds.
So when you get up in the morning, stop complaining about unimportant things. Look around you, and thank God for another wonderful day!
