Your Opinion: Response to Ranter on biblical stance

CNHI

— A "rant" in the Jan. 22 issue of the Gazette challenges a pro-life columnist's Biblical stance on the issue of abortion, stating that the book of Leviticus requires that a pregnancy resulting from adultery would require stoning of the woman. Since several pro-life columns have been published recently, I'm not sure if the reader is referring to mine or not, but I appreciate the opportunity to respond.

I wish he had cited the referenced scripture in Leviticus, however, because I have been unable to locate any biblical references that require stoning of a pregnant woman. On the contrary, Exodus 21:23 directs that anyone who injures a pregnant woman, causing a miscarriage or stillborn birth, is to be put to death. It seems very clear that God included the unborn when he gave the sixth commandment, "You shall not murder." (NIV)
