Rants and Raves for November 20

Remember

“There are two fundamental differences between a democracy and a dictatorship. In a democracy the government is very inefficient and uses taxes unwisely, such as Medicare. However, in a democracy Americans have personal liberties, such as free speech, freedom of religion and the right to send hate e-mail messages. On the other hand, in a dictatorship the government is very efficient when doing things such as operating a postal service or maintaining universal health coverage for people. However, in a dictatorship the people do not have personal liberties, such as free speech and the liberty to send hate e-mail messages. Voters! Remember! Individual responsibility goes with every personal liberty given to each American.”

Good people

“I want to tell Miss Brenda York and everyone who works at the Tift Regional Oncology Center that I thank them for loving each and every patient. They are such nice and good people.”

Down the drain

“I see in the paper where the postal service run by the United States government lost $3.8 billion last year and lost $2.8 billion the previous year. This looks like another debacle. And we want to trust the government to run our health care and come out with a balanced budget on that? I don’t think so.”

Crackling search

“Well, I was a country boy and went off to war and I finally came home and I still have my country ways. I like crackling bread and collard greens, and I haven’t been able to find any cracklings that are worth putting into crackling bread. I mean, when I go to all the stores, and I went to all of them I could think of, they have these little white cracklings in a bag and it looked like they were gut cracklings, you know, where there’s fat and guts that’s been cooked and it doesn’t have any skins and there’s not any meat on it, and you just can’t season cornbread that way. If there’s anybody that knows where you can find good old cracklings I sure would like to know...”

Other problems

“This is to ‘Rise up Blue Devil Nation.’ I believe at this juncture in time Tiftarea needs to worry a lot more about jobs and infrastructure and people not being able to eat, the health of our people and many, many, many other things rather than Blue Devil Nation or football. We’re going through a lot of things as a nation right now and I think football should be one of the last things we worry about. Think about that.”

He’ll be missed

“Duke. His name was Duke. He turned 1 on Sept. 1. This is for the person that hit my baby puppy on Baldwin Drive on Nov. 17, 2009 and didn’t bother to stop. That little puppy was my world. I can’t remember life before him and I certainly can’t imagine it without him. I miss you, Duke. Your love touched all of us and we’ll sure miss you.”
