Your Opinion: Tift County sheriff encourages community to come together

Friends and neighbors, this is a critical time in our nation and in our community, and in order to make it through these challenging times, we need to come together as a community. In my first month as sheriff we have faced many acts of violence and each one reaffirms the need for us to unite as neighbors and love and help thy neighbor. No matter how many times you comfort a grieving family at a crime scene, it never gets any easier and I always find myself in the family’s position asking, “What if this was my family? How many more times do our friends and neighbors have to die before we stand up and say enough is a enough?”

This violence has to stop. This violence will stop in Tift County. I pledge today, as I have from day one, that I will continue to work on building a coalition in our community of civic groups, faith-based organizations and neighbors who can come together and show our children in the community that there are better options and more opportunities for them besides the path that many are on today. My heart bleeds for the families that are torn apart by these tragedies, and I will work day and night to bring an end to it in our county. I ask that you continue to be on the lookout in the com- munity and you do your part to help ensure safety. If you see anything or hear anything out of the ordinary, give us a call at the sheriff ’s office at 229-388-6020. A strong community that is bonded together is the biggest deterrent against violence and crime. We have a great group of men and women at the sheriff ’s office who are dedicated to our coun- ty. With your help, we will continue to make Tift County a better place to live, work and raise a family. I ask for your continued support and prayers for the whole office as we move forward. As always, feel free to call me at my home at 386-0626 if you have any questions for me. God Bless you, your family and Tift County.

  • Students aren't blueberries

Dear Public School Teachers in Georgia: It looks as if you have survived another year of underwhelming support from state legislators, many of whom would kiss a tree toad if so instructed by the anti-public education crowd. I know it is frustrating but as my daddy used to say, consider the source.

You knew this was going to be a special season.
From the season-opener, a 7-5 win over Crisp County and UGA signee Robert Tyler, to the very last pitch in Marietta May 15, the Tift County baseball team took us on a great journey that reached even further than on the baseball field for me.

  • May 21 Column – George F. Will

Leaving aside the seriousness of lawlessness, and the corruption of our civic culture by the professionally pious, this past week has been amusing. There was the spectacle of advocates of an ever-larger regulatory government expressing shock about such government's large capacity for misbehavior. And, entertainingly, the answer to the question "Will Barack Obama's scandals derail his second-term agenda?" was a question: What agenda?

As a grandson of Henry Harding Tift and a long-time resident of Tift County, I would like to tip my hat to Edd Dorminey for the pivotal role he played in petitioning the state legislature to officially recognize the original intent that Tift County be named in honor of Capt. Tift.

I caught a lot of flack the past couple of days because, and I quote, “You write a column and you didn’t write about your mom for Mothers Day?”
    Yeah. Um. Just yeah.
