TIFTON — Tift County senior Micah McCant scored a touchdown passing, rushing and on an interception return to lead the Blue Devils to a 20-0 win over Cook High Friday night at Brodie Field.
With the win, the Devils close out their non-region slate at 1-2. Tift will travel to Warner Robins to take on the Demons on Friday.
“Micah had a great game,” Tift County head coach Jay Walls said.
“He ran hard, and the pick (for touchdown) was huge.”
The Hornets moved the ball well on their second possession, with nice runs by Armad Turner and Shannon Brown to move the ball out of the shadow of the Hornets’ goalposts.
On a second down play, Hornet quarterback Tim Rowe was intercepted and returned 16 yards by sophomore defensive back Terrence Felton, giving the Blue Devils the football at the Cook 17 yard line.
After a Malcolm Dixon run gave Tift a first down inside the Hornets’ 5, McCant took a five yard loss back to the 9-yard line on a toss sweep.
A five yard penalty then backed the Blue Devils up to the Hornets’ 14 yard line, where McCant scored his first touchdown of the night.
Taking advantage of Cook’s aggressiveness, McCant took a toss sweep to the right side of the formation, raised up — and found Jakevin Jackson open for a touchdown in the corner of the endzone.
Griffin Martin’s PAT gave Tift a 7-0 lead with 5:14 left in the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, a Dixon pass was intercepted by the Hornets and returned 36 yards for a touchdown.
However, the play was wiped out due to a personal foul on a Cook player behind the play. The player was ejected from the game.
Taking over at their own 49 yard line, the Hornets moved the ball down the field behind the legs of Brown, who had 35 yards on the drive.
But inside the Devils’ 10, the Hornets could not pick up a first down or a touchdown, as Tift turned in four outstanding plays — denying the Hornets points.
There, the Blue Devils took over and put together a 10 play, 90-yard drive, behind McCant and Dixon. Dixon found McCant for a 28-yard pass that put the ball inside Cook territory. McCant capped the drive with an 18-yard touchdown run where the senior all-purpose player started left, went right and scored by diving into the endzone.
Martin’s PAT was true, and the Devils led 14-0 with just over two minutes remaining in the half.
McCant put the icing on the cake, when he picked off Rowe in the fourth quarter. McCant fielded the ball like it were a punt, and used his blockers to score with 5:34 remaining in the game.
The snap was bad and Tift led 20-0.
McCant rushed for 58 yards on 13 carries, and completed a pass for 14 yards and a touchdown. The Devils had 210 yards of offense in the game.
Brown led Cook with 53 yards rushing. The Hornets had only 115 yards in the contest.
